Wyzwanie pokolenia pustyni
Mojżesz wysyła delegację dwunastu „szpiegów”, którzy mają zebrać informacje o terenie, do którego się zbliżają. Wysłannicy wracają z wiadomością, iż ziemia jest odpowiednia, ale dodają też, że lud, który ją zamieszkuje, jest bardzo silny i Izraelici nie mają w starciu z nim żadnych szans. Naród Izraela słyszy te słowa i zaczyna płakać. Tylko dwóch spośród dwunastu wysłanników wyraża inną opinię, opartą na wierze i zaufaniu;

Szabat szalom,
R. David

The challenge of the desert generation

Moshe sends a delegation of 12 "spies" to collect information about the land they are headed to. The emissaries return and say that the land is good, but then they add that the nation inhabiting it is very strong and we have no chance in winning against them. The people of Israel heard the report and started crying. Only 2 of the 12 emissaries expressed a different opinion that is based on faith and tried to convince everyone that there is still a chance.

The emissaries are punished for their sin - instead of providing information they added their interpretation and scared the whole nation. But the nation itself is also punished. It is not an immediate punishment (death in a plague like the spies themselves) but a long process aimed not only to punish but to fix the situation.

The common thing between the spies and the people of Israel is a problem in how they perceive themselves. The spies say that they felt "like grasshoppers" when they saw the giants who inhabit the land. The people hear this and cry out of despair. The problem is that these are people who were slaves their entire lives and still do not believe in themselves. The healing, or fixing will be waiting for the next generation who was born and raised in the desert - they are free people. This is a generation that can face war, giants, hardships. This is the meaning of "the desert generation" a generation that knows they will die in the desert and will not reach the promised land.

This is a big challenge. To understand that you will not fulfill the dream, but you still need to help develop the next generation. (not everyone lived up to this challenge, there were a few attempts to rebel against this punishment - they all failed). We are used to thinking about the desert generation as weak and poor people who didn't get to reach the promised land, but we can also appreciate their hardship of nurturing the next generation, for the future of the whole nation.

Shabbat shalom,
R. David
