Charakter judaizmu, który tworzył  się na przestrzeni wieków na obszarach Rzeczpospolitej stanowi  ciekawe wyzwanie dla pytań o  tożsamość żydowską. Pojęcie tożsamości rozumiemy jak najbardziej szeroko (problem metodologicznego konstruowania tożsamości; przykładowe rozumienie tożsamości w ujęciu Z. Baumana; czy możliwe jest wyartykułowanie swoistej bez-tożsamości?). Różnorodne próby jej definiowania tworzą złożony i niejednorodny  obraz kultury Żydów. Tematyka wschodnioeuropejskiego judaizmu jest w ostatnich latach żywo podejmowana, ale nadal wymaga szerokiego namysłu. Celem konferencji jest naszkicowanie pola problemowego, w ramach którego wyłonią się ścieżki żydowskiej tożsamości. Osobną kwestią jest pytanie o to, czy taki fenomen daje się w ogóle wyłuskać. Czy można mówić o czymś takim, jak korzenie tożsamości?

               Spektrum problemowo-tematyczne, które chcielibyśmy zaproponować, koncentruje się wokół następujących zagadnień:

·         czy tylko Tora jest źródłem tożsamości Żydów wschodnioeuropejskich? Czy istnieją także pozareligijne wyznaczniki tożsamości?,

·         status prawny Żydów w Rzeczpospolitej,

·         język jidysz jako wyznacznik tożsamości,

·         oblicza tożsamości w kontekście różnych odłamów chasydyzmu,

·         organizacje bundowskie jako tożsamościowa alternatywa,

·         tożsamość maskila – wyzwania rzucone przez Haskalę,

·         czy tożsamość może być budowana relacyjnie w rozumieniu: tożsamość-do? Synagoga versus Ecclesia,

·         wyznaczniki generujące tożsamość w życiu codziennym, na przykład strój, literatura, obyczajowość etc.

3rd National Scientific Conference dedicated to Jewish themes. This year’s  event is entitled:

East European Judaism and the question of Jewish identity

The conference will be held 17th-18th January 2013
at AMU Institute of European Culture in Gniezno.

The nature of Judaism which developed through the centuries on the territories of the Rzeczpospolita presents a compelling challenge for  the questions concerning Jewish identity. The notion of identity is approached as broadly as possible (the issue of developing a methodological framework of identity, a model understanding of identity according to Z. Bauman; is it possible to articulate one’s ‘identilessness’?) The various attempts at defining it produce a complex and heterogeneous image of the culture of Jews. The issue of East European Judaism has recently been readily addressed, yet it still requires a comprehensive deliberation. The aim of the conference is to outline the problem field, within which the paths of Jewish identity will be revealed.    A separate issue is the question whether it is feasible to isolate such phenomenon at all. Can one even speak of a thing like the roots of identity?

               The spectrum of issues and themes we would like to suggest focuses around the following problems:

is Torah the only source of identity for East European Jews? Are there any non-religious determinants of identity as well?

the legal status of Jews in Poland across the ages,

Yiddish as identity marker,

the facets of identity with respect to various sections of Hasidism,

Bund organisations as an identity alternative,

the identity of maskil – challenges posed by the Haskala,

can identity be developed in relational mode: identity-towards? Synagogue versus Ecclesia,

determinants fostering identity in everyday life, e.g. attire, literature, mores, etc.
